Basement Well Production
Among the Clearwater Project’s innovations will be drilling additional wells to add production and increase resource recovery from untapped reservoir areas. AOS’ concept is to place these additional wells (light green in diagram below) beneath and between the producing wells of the initial SAGD well pairs (red and green in diagram below). These “basement” wells are intended to exploit previously injected heat and diluent that moved below the primary steam chamber and would otherwise be lost, as well as to tap the previously inaccessible areas of the reservoir.
AOS believes that this approach can add value to the company by recovering, at low incremental capital cost, additional bitumen that would otherwise remain in the reservoir. Because the basement well approach with a developed steam chamber has never been tried before, no field analogue is available to estimate production rates, reserve additions or capital efficiencies for the future basement wells.
